More fun in the new world

Survived first week at new job. Somewhat worried though about how to get use out of my iPhone there due to the use of Lotus Notes and their IT Dept mistrust of security on the iPhone (read no near-term implementation of iNotes). Problem is how to at LEAST get a Calendar/Contact sync between the two. [...]

First day at new job

Hmm. So, let’s just say I was a bit underwhelmed by the IT aspects. New laptop is underpowered and had a busted network card. Internal bureaucracy feels a bit stifling but then perhaps that’s just a first impression. Well, in the words of Howard Jones, “Things can only get better”, right?
Uh uh oh oh oh [...]

Ukiyo-e Expo at the Cernuschi Museum in Paris

This year, we in Paris are blessed with lots of great expositions around Japan. Earlier this year, there was the extraordinary Hukosai expo at the Musée Guiment. Today I visited the Courtisans expo at the Cernuschi. In mid-October, the Petit Palais will be putting on Zen and Japan. Fantastic!
The expo at the Cernuschi opened today. [...]

iPhoto Hell

I spent the entire day cleaning up the mess that iPhoto made with my photos. Oops wife and kid are home gotta run…
Finally got this project finished. It took about 2 days:
1/ copy all original photos out of iPhoto and eliminate duplicates (about 1500)
2/ backup and delete iPhoto database
3/ in clean database, turn off “copy [...]

Obsessional GTD

I wonder if I am just nuts of if others have had this mania: I read the GTD book as I have previously mentioned and have been working to implement it in my personal life before a major job change. My thinking is that if I get this stuff right NOW, I will be more [...]

The French, an insider’s view: The French and Religion

I get asked all the time questions like:
“So, do you like living in France?”
“Do you wanna move back to the States?”
“Why didn’t you stay in Miami, the weather is so much nicer there?”
And so on. There are lots of books by far more articulate folks than me (Stephen Clarke, who I honestly haven’t read, yet, [...]

Getting Things Done – in French

David Allen’s book was finally translated into French and published over here in Paris. The (awkard) French title is “S’Organiser pour Réussir” (LEDUC.S Editions, 2008) and was translated by Michel Édery. I have the sneaking suspicion that Mr. Édery is a Québecois because certain expressions he uses are clearly québecois (“boîte d’entrée” instead of “boîte [...]

Favorite Firefox Extensions and Tricks

My current list of Firefox Extensions and Add-ons. After multiple performance and stability issues, I am being far less trigger-happy in installing these so this pared-down list is what I am using at the moment.
AdBlock Plus + Filterset.G Updater + Element Hiding Helper – safer surfing
All-in-One Gestures – highly touted but I haven’t honestly had [...]

Web 2.0 Update…

I am still struggling with some of this web2.0-ish stuff regarding calendars especially. Seems that iCal deleted a couple of appointments (to the annoyance of the appointees) during this whole exercise
I sure wish I could get consistent sync’ing b/w iCal and Google Calendar – for me it is only in the iCal -> [...]

Favorite iPhone 3G Apps (early Sept ‘08)

CAUTION: the BossPrefs app from Cydia intermittently breaks Phone.App so that’s why it isn’t installed.

Essential apps from Cydia:
Winterboard (so I can see Archie in the background
3proxy (for tethering to the MBP for access with no Wifi)
Cycorder (why didn’t Apple think of this one?)
Terminal (’nuff said)
Netatalk (for easier access to iPhone from Finder on [...]
