Bands of Brothers

I have a sister rather than a brother and always wondered what having a brother would be like. My son probably will never know either as he, just like me, has just a younger sister. I suppose in my imagination, I’d be playing in a rock band with a brother and that thought got my mind to musing about rock bands with brothers. A little bit of research and I found 10 such bands – but not in any particular order

Van Halen – Alex and Eddie Van Halen
Kings of Leon – the 3 Followills (+ a cousin!)
The Beach Boys – Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson
AC/DC – Malcolm and Angus Young
The Kinks – Ray and Dave Davies
Allman Brothers – Duane and Greg Allman
The Meters – Art and Cyril Neville
The Bee Gees – Robin, Barry, and Maurice Gibbs (actually the original band name was the Brothers Gibb – thus the B. G.s)
Toto – Steve and Jeff Porcaro
The Stooges – Ron and Scott Asheton
Crowded House – The Finn Brothers
Styx – Chuck and John Panozzo

The interesting thing is that many of the dual brother outfits were the rhythm section (The Stooges, Toto, etc). Also in this list are a three of the greatest guitarists ever: Eddie, Duane and Angus. Did competition with their kin push them to stardom?

Other groups have played on the brother (or brother/sister) mystique: White Stripes claimed for a long time that married couple Meg and Jack White were brother and sister.
The other two-person outfit I like, The Black Keys, latest album is simply called Brothers although they are unrelated. There is also the mythic Brothers in Arms from Dire Straits.
And who could forget The Doobie Brothers who were only, well brothers in weed smoking.

Did I miss any critical bands in this list? Let me know in the comments 🙂

My personal favorites (appart from Kinks, Meters, BGs & Stooges) :
    – Radiohead (Jonny and Colin Greenwood)
    – Creedence Clearwater Revival (John and Tom Fogerty)
    – The black crowes (Chris et Rich Robinson)
Also : Oasis (Noel and Liam Gallagher) and the Jackson 5
Try to drive your kids on a brother/sister band (a bit more funky than the carpenters would be a challenge)
